Graco Nautilus 3 in 1 Car Seat aside, there are literally hundreds of kids car seats on the market today.

It’s a bewildering choice and I know it can be difficult to make a decision as to which car seat is the best for you.

If your child is 1 year old and at least 20 lbs, you can start using  a forward facing car seat. If they’re younger or weigh less than 20lbs, then they still need to be put in a rear-facing car seat.

I’ve chosen the Graco Nautilus car seat for review because currently its one of the best  and hottest selling car seats today and because it’s versatile, well built, extremely strong, has an excellent safety test record, and is very good value for your money.

Longevity of the Graco Nautilus Car Seat

This is a 3 in 1 car seat – so with this car seat you don’t need to worry about buying another car seat because your child has outgrown.

In the long term that’s a significant amount of savings. Why buy 1 car seat 3 or perhaps even 4 car seats when one will do.

Well, the seat can be converted from a high back 5 point harness car seat, to a high back booster and finally to a backless booster seat.

Graco Nautilus’s Versatility

This seat is suitable for any child between 20 lbs and 100 lbs, from 27 inches to 57 inches tall – which is more than any other car seat on the market. It converts from a high back 5 point harness seat to a high back booster and finally a backless booster seat.

  • 5 point harness seat for children from 20lbs to 65 lbs (27 -52 inches tall).
  • High back booster for children 30- 100 lbs (38- 57 inches tall)
  • Backless booster seat for children 40- 100 lbs (40- 57 inches tall)

If your child is still too small for the Graco Nautilus then you’ll be please to learn that Graco has recently launched its Graco Signature Series Smart Seat which I’d describe as a 4-in-1 system. Its quite bit more expensive than the Graco Nautilus, but again it may be a good way to save money in the long-term especially if this is the first time that you’re buying a child car seat.

  • The head rest is adjustable and the seat can be converted  and adjusted to the best fit for your child as they grow, which means the seat remains comfortable for longer.
  • Red shoulder belt guides makes it easy for you to know exactly where to position the headrest for maximum safety and comfort.
  • Graco Nautilus comes with a 3 point recliner setting to make your child feel more comfortable for those longer journeys.

Graco Nautilus’ Safety Record

The Graco Nautilus has a very strong reputation within the baby and toddler car seat market with some of the best crash test ratings in the industry. The car seat has undergone a plethora of crash safety tests. It has met – and in some instances – exceeded US Safety Standards and U.S Compliance Standards.

In fact The Nautilus passed with flying colours the New Car Assessment Program with peak Crash Force twice the Car Seat Standard.

The Nautilus incorporates a steel reinforced structure and the latest EPS energy-absorbing foam for additional security, comfort and durability.

Some additional popular features:

  • A cup holder that is big enough for a big boys water bottle.
  • Storage compartments located within both armrests –  great for storing things to occupy your child during long or short journeys.
  • Machine washable seat pad.

Some Downsides of the Graco Nautilus Car Seat

1. The biggest criticisms from some customers of the graco nautilus is the crotch strap.

The complaint is that their child is practically sitting on the crotch strap and that it looks uncomfortable. However, I should point out that the entire 5 point harness system is adjustable and removable.

Perhaps slight adjustments need to be made to the harness system. It important therefore to ensure during installation that the harness straps and in particular the crotch strap is fed through correctly so the crotch strap position is the one closest to but not under your child. Also, if your child is big for his or her age then be guided by the size and weight recommendations as stated above for this convertible seat. If your child does seem to be sitting on the crotch strap, maybe they’re told big for the 5 point harness?

If this doesn’t solve the problem, I would always recommend returning the product. Its important therefore that you choose a reputable vendor that won’t have a problem in you returning products if you’re not happy with them. With most online transaction you should be given the right to return the goods but you’ll always find some retailers that make it more difficult than it is or that charge you to return the product.

2. Another negative point cited is that this seat requires a bit more assembly and can be a  bit fiddly when it comes to converting the chair from high back harness to backless booster.

I doubt that a seasoned hand at installing child car seats will have much of a challenge, but if you’re new to child car seats, this car seat may be a bit fiddly initially – but the upside is that you’ll make a significant saving in the long term.
